Spells, rules, and one box
A creature's spell list is a list of links. Twenty five of the words a table argues about carry a plain note that opens where the word sits. And one box finds anything you own, in any book, narrowed in the same line you type it.
Spell cards where the spell is named
The thing a stat block never does on paper: tell you what the spell actually is.
- Open a creature that casts. Every spell in its list is a link, and so is any spell you own that a block says it casts in plain prose.
- Hover it with a mouse, or tap it on a touch screen, and the card appears beside the name with its level, its range and the start of its text.
- Press it again for the whole card, opened over whatever you are running.
- Escape closes it, wherever you are.
It is reachable from the keyboard as well as the mouse: the card opens when the link takes focus, so a DM who does not want to chase a pointer mid-fight does not have to.
Honest limitsA spell you have not got says so in plain words, and names the pack that carries it when your library knows which one does. The card comes from what you own: the free reference in the box, a free pack you downloaded, or your own homebrew, all answering the same way.
The word explained
Twenty five of the words that stop a table dead, in plain language, where the word sits.
- The conditions are in there, along with exhaustion, concentration, advantage and disadvantage, a saving throw, an opportunity attack, cover, a reaction, a bonus action, a ritual and a cantrip.
- Hover or focus the word in whatever you are reading and the note opens beside it.
- Escape closes it.
Honest limitsThese are plain-words reminders, not the rule text. They are here to stop a five minute argument, not to replace the book: the full rule is in the free reference the app ships with, and Space finds it.
One box, and how to narrow it
Everything you own answers the same keypress.
- Press Space.
- Type any phrase you remember. Hits come back from titles and from the words inside your books.
- Narrow it in the same line: kind:monster, cr:2, level:3, school:evocation, tag:undead.
- Press Enter on a hit. A card opens over the scene you are running; a PDF opens at the page.
Honest limitsThe narrowing words are printed under the box, so you never have to remember them. They combine: a phrase and two of them together is still one line of typing.
One book, not everything you own
When you know exactly which book it was in, say so and the noise goes away.
- Press Space.
- Type book: and a piece of the title, like book:salt.
- Add any other filter beside it.
- Or open the book itself and use the filter box at the top of its Contents, which only ever searches that one book.
Honest limitsbook: matches on the title, so two books with near-identical titles need a longer piece of the name to tell apart.
The free rulebook packs
Whole openly licensed rulebooks, built as Keepers, costing nothing.
- Go to the free packs on the Grimoire page.
- Download one. It is a single file, like every other Keeper.
- Drop it into your Grimoire.
- Every monster, spell and item in it answers Space from the next keypress.
The SRD 5.2.1 reference is already in the box, free under CC-BY-4.0: the monsters, the spells, the items and the rules. The packs sit beside it, so a free pack, a book you bought and your own homebrew all answer the same keypress.
Honest limitsA spell card exists for a spell you own, which is exactly why a missing one names the pack instead of shrugging. Downloading that pack is the whole fix, and it costs nothing. Getting your own books in is its own walkthrough: your own books, step by step.
Hover one spell
Open a creature that casts, put the pointer on the first spell in its list, and see whether the card arrives fast enough to be worth using mid-sentence. That is the only measure that matters on this one.
