Classes

Class and level set your proficiency bonus, hit dice, saving throws, and spell slots automatically. You can still adjust anything by hand.

Abilities & Saves
Skills

Tap the dot: none, proficient, expertise.

Combat Numbers

Those three are the extras a magic item or feature adds on top of the normal math, like a Cloak of Protection or a Rod of the Pact Keeper. An import fills them in when your export names them.

Attacks

New attacks start at your proficiency bonus plus your best of Strength or Dexterity. Tap an attack's numbers to change them. Attacks the Forge built keep their rule (the ability, the die, the magic) and follow your level.

Companions & Forms

A companion (a familiar, a steed, a summoned beast) keeps its own hit points and attacks on the Fight tab. A form is a shape you can wear: assume it and your AC, speed and attacks become the form's while your hit points stay yours; a Druid gains temporary hit points equal to their level and spends a Wild Shape.

Resources

Rage, Second Wind, Channel Divinity, Focus Points and the rest appear on the Fight tab by themselves and grow with your level. Add anything else that has a number of uses here.

Feats, Features & Magic Items

Anything that changes your numbers goes here, with a switch on it. Your import fills in what its file described; add the rest yourself and the whole sheet does the math, whatever book it came out of.

How to get your D&D Beyond export
  1. Sign in on dndbeyond.com and open your character sheet. Under the portrait, set the character to Public.
  2. Note the number at the end of the sheet's address, for example dndbeyond.com/characters/12345678.
  3. Visit character-service.dndbeyond.com/character/v5/character/12345678 with your number.
  4. Select all the text on that page, copy it, and paste it above.

The Satchel reads your numbers, your choices, and the text your export carries: stats, classes, hit points, spells, items, coin. Text from your import stays on your device; the table only ever sees your rolls and your name. Works with your D&D Beyond export; not affiliated with D&D Beyond.

How to get your Foundry VTT actor file
  1. In Foundry (dnd5e system), right-click your character in the Actors sidebar.
  2. Choose Export Data. A .json file downloads.
  3. Drop that file above, or paste its contents.

Step-by-step with pictures-in-words: the Handbook.

Add Spells

Spells beyond the SRD keep their name here; if your import carried its own text, that text shows on this device only. Otherwise: see your book.

Pair with the Table

Link this Satchel to your DM's screen. Your rolls show up at the table, and the initiative order and any handouts land right here. Only your rolls leave this device. Your sheet stays yours.

Not paired
The quick way · a table code

Your DM reads a short code off their screen. Type it here.

No code? Paste the DM's invite

First time pairing? The Handbook walks you through it, hotspot trick included.

Paired with the table. You are at the table as Player.

Roll from your sheet and it shows up for everyone. Watch the top of the screen for your turn. Let the phone sleep whenever it likes: on waking, the Satchel rejoins the table by itself, and anything you missed is already waiting in your Journal.

Your Books

The Forge ships with the free SRD. Everything else you own or wrote goes here: species, backgrounds, feats, spells, items, armor, whole classes and subclasses. Type it in, load a book file, or read a book you own (PDF, EPUB, Word, text, a web page, a 5eTools file). It stays in this browser and the Satchel never sends it anywhere.

The rules of the shelf

Type in what you own, or what you wrote. Where a name matches something the SRD already has, the SRD keeps the name and yours is shown with the book's name after it. Remove a book and the characters built from it keep their names and show an honest content not installed line. Nothing here can be shared from inside the Satchel, on purpose: your books are yours.

Gnasher's Satchel
Gnash

Your character, your rolls, your notes. One file, no account, works with no signal in the basement. Gnash keeps it safe.

Lost?

Open the Handbook, the full how-to: install it, bring a character over, join your DM's table, back everything up.

The Table's Other Half

This is the player side of the table. The DM side is Gnasher's Grimoire, the free binder that runs whole adventures: longislanddungeonmaster.com/grimoire. Adventures and packs live at longislanddungeonmaster.com/keepers.

Something broken?

Report a problem . The Satchel writes up the technical details for you. Nothing is ever sent by the app. You read the whole report on screen and send it yourself; it carries counts only, never your character, your notes, or anything your DM whispered you.

About

Gnasher's Satchel™ · build 2026-09-04.5 · © 2026 Long Island Dungeon Master. 'Gnasher's Satchel', 'Gnasher's Grimoire', 'Adventure Keepers', and the .satchel format are marks of Long Island Dungeon Master.

Free tool. Runs offline; your characters stay on this device, in this browser. Export a .satchel backup from any character's Journal tab.

Your own material works in the Forge through Your Books, and it never leaves this browser.

Report a problem

Something broken, confusing, or just wrong? Say what happened; the Satchel fills in the technical part.

What gets sent. Read it: this is the whole report

The Satchel never sends this anywhere. No telemetry, no reporting service; you send it yourself. Everything the app added is counts and status: never your character sheet, your journal, your rolls, or a whisper. Your description is included exactly as you type it, so leave out anything you would not want to share. (“Email it” hands the report to your own mail app, which may be webmail.)

Send it to frank@longislanddungeonmaster.com. Bugs, wishes and “this made no sense” are all welcome.

How to Use the Satchel

Everything here works with no account and no signal. Gnash ate the manual so you'd get this instead.

1 · Put it on your phone

The Satchel is a web page that installs like an app, so it opens full screen and works offline.

Android (Chrome):

  1. Open the Satchel in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right.
  3. Tap Add to Home screen, then Install.

iPhone / iPad (Safari):

  1. Open the Satchel in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with the arrow pointing up).
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.

After the first visit it opens with no internet at all. Your characters live on your device, in this browser; nothing is uploaded anywhere.

2 · Make a character in three minutes

  1. Tap + New Character.
  2. The Study opens (the full-screen editor; the pencil on the Sheet tab reopens it any time). Type a name, pick a class and level.
  3. Tap Standard array 15 14 13 12 10 8 to drop in ready-made ability scores, or set your own with the + and − steppers.
  4. Saving throws and skills: tap a skill's dot to cycle it (blank, proficient, expert). AC and hit points figure themselves out unless you switch them to manual.
  5. Close the Study. That's a playable character; everything else can wait.

3 · Bring a character from D&D Beyond

You carry your own data: D&D Beyond shows it to you, you copy it, you paste it here. The Satchel never talks to D&D Beyond behind your back; every step happens in your own tabs.

  1. Make the character public first (this is the step everyone misses): on your character page open Manage (the gear), then Character Settings, and set Privacy to Public. Your data page only answers for public characters.
  2. Copy your character's link: the page's own address, something like dndbeyond.com/characters/12345678.
  3. In the Satchel, tap Import and paste the link (the Paste button does it in one tap). The Satchel cuts the number out and opens your data page in a new tab.
  4. That tab shows a wall of code (your character as raw data). Select all, copy.
  5. Come back and tap Paste again. Done: the Satchel imports it on the spot.

If the new tab shows Forbidden or an error instead of the wall of code, the character isn't Public yet; that's step 1, and the Satchel will say so plainly if you paste what that tab gave you.

Text from your import (spell, item, and feature descriptions you own) stays on your device; the table only ever sees your rolls and your name.

After the first import, the Sheet tab grows a Refresh from D&D Beyond button. When you level up over there, one tap opens your data page; copy, come back, paste. The Satchel updates the sheet in place and keeps every note, handout, and roll you made here.

Doing it by hand instead: visit character-service.dndbeyond.com/character/v5/character/YOUR-NUMBER yourself (the number from the end of your character page's address), copy what appears, and paste it into Import.

4 · Bring a character from Foundry VTT

  1. In Foundry, right-click your character in the Actors sidebar and choose Export Data. That saves a .json file.
  2. In the Satchel: tap Import, then Choose a file and pick it (or open the file, copy everything, and paste).

5 · Rolling dice

  1. Tap any ability, save, skill, or attack on your sheet and it rolls, with your bonus already in.
  2. Advantage or disadvantage: set Adv / Normal / Dis on the dice tray first (the leather strip at the bottom; pull it up for loose dice and your roll history).
  3. The tray's log keeps the night's rolls. Sweep clears it; it asks first.

6 · The Fight tab

  1. Damage, Heal, and Temp HP live inside the big hit-point plaque. Tap, type the number, done.
  2. At 0 hit points the plaque turns into death saves: tap Roll Death Save, the successes and failures mark themselves. Healing brings the plaque back.
  3. Conditions: tap + on the condition rail to add one (poisoned, prone, and the rest). Tap a condition chip to read its rules or clear it.
  4. Spell slots and hit dice sit below as coins; tap to spend, and casting a spell from the Spells tab spends the slot for you.
  5. Short Rest and Long Rest wait at the bottom and do the bookkeeping.

7 · Join your DM's table

If your DM runs Gnasher's Grimoire (the free DM app), your Satchel can link to it live. Your rolls appear on the DM's screen, and their handouts land in your Journal.

  1. Tap the wax seal in the top left corner.
  2. Your DM opens the table and reads out a short code, something like EMBER-42.
  3. Type it in and tap Join. The seal glows when you're linked, and the Satchel remembers the code, so it rejoins by itself next session.

No internet at the table? Switch the pairing mode to same-room and trade the invite by paste instead; the Satchel walks you through it. Sharpest trick when the venue wifi is garbage: the DM turns on their phone's hotspot and everyone joins that.

8 · At the table

Your turn: when the DM runs a fight, the turn order appears under your header, and when it reaches you a big YOUR TURN banner takes over the top of the screen. Tap it to land on your Fight tab.

Handouts and whispers: anything the DM pushes (maps, letters, pictures) lands in your Journal tab under Handouts. A whisper is a handout sent to you alone; it says so on the card, and the rest of the table never sees it.

"Resting": if your phone dozes off, the table shows your seat as resting. Nothing is lost; the DM's table holds whatever you missed and hands it over the moment your screen wakes. Just unlock your phone and carry on.

9 · The notebook

  1. Session Notes (Journal tab): tap + New and you get a page dated today, one per session.
  2. Campaign Notes: tap + New Page for free pages you name yourself: villains, debts, the innkeeper's name.
  3. Handouts are yours to keep: rename them, jot a note under each one, and tag them (type a few words like clues, maps under the handout). Tags become filter chips above the list.

10 · Backups (do this one)

Your characters live in this browser only. Clearing the browser's site data would take them with it, so give each character a lifeboat:

  1. Journal tab, bottom bench: tap Export .satchel. That saves a small file holding the whole character, notes and all.
  2. Keep it anywhere (cloud drive, email to yourself). To bring it back, or to move to a new phone: Import, then Choose a file.

That's the whole Satchel. Anything else, poke it; nothing in here bites. Except me. Signed, Gnash.

11 · Your Books (your own material in the Forge)

The Forge ships with the free SRD. If you own other material, or you wrote your own, the Forge can use it too. Tap Your Books on the shelf.
